This is the 39th annual surveillance report concerning the nuclear power plant of Gravelines. Its very high power level results from six plant units located on the shore and is characterised by a cooling system with a coastal surface input and output. The production of electricity began in 1980 and reached a maximum in 1986. Surveys concern monitoring of pelagic system (hydrology, microbiology, phytoplankton, and zooplankton), fish populations (larvae and eggs of Sole and Sprat) or crustaceans (shrimps), and benthic macrofauna (intertidal and subtidal). This survey deals with spatial and temporal approaches (i) study of the direct impact by comparison of the input and output seawater stations, (ii) study of medium and long term evolution of the area by... |

Planktonic ciliates were studied in 17 tropical East African lakes of different salinity and trophic status. Oligotrichs (e.g., Strombidium, Strobilidium and Halteria) and scuticociliates (e.g., Cyclidium, Pleuronema, Cristigera), dominated the ciliate communities. Conductivity and trophic status were the most important environmental variables influencing the distribution of ciliate species in East African lakes. Herbivorous oligotrichs were important in oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes, as they are in temperate and subtropical lakes, but their importance decreased with increasing chlorophyll a concentration and conductivity. On the other hand, the importance of scuticociliates (primarily bacterivores) increased with increasing chlorophyll a and... |

Blastodinium is a genus of dinoflagellates that live as parasites in the gut of marine, planktonic copepods in theWorld’s oceans and coastal waters. The taxonomy, phylogeny, and physiology of the genus have only been explored to a limited degree and, based on recent investigations, we hypothesize that the morphological and genetic diversity within this genus may be considerably larger than presently recognized. To address these issues, we obtained 18S rDNA and ITS gene sequences for Blastodinium specimens of different geographical origins, including representatives of the type species. This genetic information was in some cases complemented with new morphological, ultrastructural, physiological, and ecological data. Because most current knowledge about... |

Marine Protected Areas have become a major tool for the conservation of marine biodiversity and resources. Yet our understanding of their efficacy is often limited because it is measured for a few biological components, typically top predators or species of commercial interest. To achieve conservation targets, marine protected areas can benefit from ecosystem-based approaches. Within such an approach, documenting the variation of plankton indicators and their covariation with climate is crucial as plankton represent the base of the food webs. With this perspective, we sought to document the variations in the emerging properties of the plankton to better understand the dynamics of the pelagic fishes, mammals and seabirds that inhabit the region. For the... |

It is often necessary to sub-sample plankton samples even if the precision of the estimation is thereby decreased. A methodological optimization is looked for. The variance depends on the procedure of construction of the aliquot (strategy) and the number of individuals counted (effort). The sub-sampling effort is allocated in a general context of repartition of the total effort between sampling and sub-sampling. This effort depends on the time consumed by the sub-sampling procedure, the volume of the aliquot and the number of individuals counted. For the same effort, a systematic procedure for the construction of sub-samples is more precise than a random one because it travels through the entire sample and is thus less dependent on the spatial distribution... |

Planktonic information obtained in four fixed stations in front of Esmeraldas coast, Punta Galera, Puerto López and salinas is analyzed, during 1999-2000 and 2003-2006 periods. Temporal variability of phytoplankton and zooplankton densities between 2004 and 2006 were mainly determined by the oceanographic characteristics, and by the interrelations between the components of plankton and seasonal distribution of the organisms, as well. Higher phytoplankton productivity was determined in front of Esmeraldas, whereas the higher concentrations of zooplankton were obsrved in Puerto López, this evidences the predation at the first by the second trophic level. the phytoplankton composition in Esmeraldasis mainly influenced by the Esmeraldas river whereas in Port... |

In 2011, in the Bay of Manta was presented a high diversity of phytoplankton species, determining a total of 75 species, 29 groups for the zooplankton, which were identified to species level the Phylum Chaetognatha identified 6 species and Cladocera with 2 species. The seasonal time during 2011, did not influence the average abundances of the dominant species of phytoplankton and zooplankton, using the student T Test statistic with 95% confidence However specific tests were performed between different stations have a greater diversity of species and stations with less diversity, showing a significant difference in the mean of the population of phytoplankton. The oceanographic conditions recorded in the Equatorial Pacific states mainly cooling during... |

The coupled system FlowCAM/ZooPhytoImage has become a real operational tool in 2014. However, to be fully adapted to the observations of phytoplankton performed in the context of the REPHY observation network and in order to better respond to present and future requests concerning the evaluation of quality of coastal and marine waters within the European requirements, such as the WFD and MSFD, new functionalities must be integrated into existing tools. Therefore, different axis of development have been proposed by UMONS and Ifremer to adapt both the digitization device and the Zoo/PhytoImage software to the constraints defined by the REPHY. First, version 5 of Zoo/PhytoImage contains recent innovations such as the development of routines to automatically... |

Observations made during a "La Nina" situation (April-May 1996) in the equatorial Pacific upwelling, between 165 degrees E and 150 degrees W, show the classic deepening of hydrological isolines from east to west, resulting in zonal gradients for surface temperature and macronutrients. However, contrasting with such a gradient, no clear zonal variation could be seen for integrated planktonic biomasses and carbon fluxes, namely: chlorophyll a, bacterial abundances, particulate organic phosphorus, mesozooplankton ash free dry weight, primary production, and the sinking flux of particulate organic carbon (POC). Moreover, mean values of these parameters along the zonal equatorial transect, are not significantly different from those of a 7-day-long time series... |

Великонхи A. pauсicostata, P. exiguum, M. arenaria, а также Modiolus phasealinus в черноморском планктоне идентифицированы... |
